Recently, Pure Digital Technology (aka theFlip), the people behind the popular theFlip Ultra cam (see my review here), flip Mino HD and other portable camcorders that are so easy to use, upgraded their FlipShare software with a few fixes and added something new: the Flip Channel!

The Flip Share channel is a special private online “channel” or really a video sharing website where you can upload your videos and share with close friends and family without worrying that everyone in the world can view it. I think this is a great idea! This makes sharing videos a lot easier! Create a channel and put in those friends you want to share it with and the software will do the rest! It will upload the videos to the “channel” and send them an email with a link to view the videos. And every time you upload a new video, they will get an email notifying them of the new video. Of course, you have full control over the sharing. Add or remove recipients on the Channel page. It’s that simple!

The FlipShare update process is fairly easy and straightforward. I decided to take some screenshots of the process while doing my update to help those who have not done the update and wished some information on how to do it. Hopefully, you’ll find it useful. To make it easier for loading, I have provided thumbnails. Hover your mouse over the images for more information on the screenshot. Click on the individual images to view a bigger picture.

Downloading and installing FlipShare software update

Download the FlipShare software from theFlip.com website and install it on your computer.

Creating and setting up Flip Channel

Create a Flip Channel by adding a video to the channel. Look for the confirmation email to activate the Flip Channel.

Flip Channel access online

You can access the Flip Channel online by going to flipchannel.com and logging in (if you have created your own Flip Channel). If you share your video via a Flip Channel, your friends will receive an email with a link to the video. They can play the video from that link.

Sharing and uploading videos to Flip Channel

You can share the videos through popular media sites like MySpace or Youtube or you can also upload the video manually. If you choose the manual route and go through the software’s prompts as shown below, the video will be converted to .wmv format and store on a specifically named folder. You will need to manually upload it to your website. Alternatively, you can locate the .avi format video on your computer and upload that file instead.

Hopefully this post has helped you get an idea of how the process works and as you can see, it’s fairly straightforward and easy to do.

When uploading the videos to the channel, especially when you are going through the manual upload process, you will notice that it does take a good chunk of time. After all, the software is converting the video into wmv. Also, it does take a while before your video shows up in the Flip Channel. Originally, I was wondering why my videos didn’t show up. I would have preferred if there were some indication that the video uploading was in progress and that it may take a while before it shows up. Also, not everyone would like to have their videos in wmv format. I personally prefer my videos in avi format. In the screenshots, I have provided the location of where the avi files are stored on your computer.

Aside from that, I am quite happy with theFlip Ultra cam and with the FlipShare software program, especially the updated version. Why not check it out yourself and update your Flipshare software too?

One of the most important and the first investment you can make for your smartphone or mobile device should be a case. The obvious reason for it is for protection. Whether it be for scratch protection (imagine finding a scratch on your newly purchased device moments after getting it), bump protection, or even extreme measures like drop or crush protection, it’s very worthwhile to spend some money on a case. After all, you spent several hundred dollars on that new smartphone or portable device. Why not spend a little bit more to protect it? Most of us may not spend the money insuring our portable device but think of having a case as a cheaper alternative to device insurance.

There are lots of different styled cases to choose from ranging from crush proof cases like those offered by Otterbox, semi hard shell cases (clear or solid color), soft leather cases and skin cases. Depending on the style, color, looks and your personal preferences, prices can range from a few dollars to hundreds. But you don’t need to break the bank to get one that can do the job at protecting your device and looking good. If you want something simple that works, take a look at Brando Workshop’s Rubberized Hard Back Case.

Brando Workshop’s Rubberized Hard Back Case is a rubberized hard back case that fits clasped on your smartphone’s back, thus the name. The half shell case is molded and formed to fit snugly and tightly clasped onto the edges and side of the device. Once snapped on, the case is securely attached on the device, providing protection decent impact and scratch protection. The case is fairly hard and retains its shape very well, although you can bend it slightly, to allow for removal from the device when necessary. Its smooth finish also allows for easy cleaning. Simply wipe with a damp cloth and it’s clean. Or, you can remove the case and wash it in warm soapy water.

The case is a rubberized hard half shell case that snaps directly onto the smartphone or device, covering and protecting the device with a hard shell layer of plastic that is sturdy and strong enough to withstand a decent impact. Mind you, the case is not designed to be crush proof or be a contender for hard impact protection that Otterbox offers, but it does offer decent protection from scratches and slight bumps and impact. The shell case is thin enough to not take up extra bulk but thick enough to stay strong and retain its shape. Although the case is quite rigid in form, it is somewhat flexible enough to be bent slightly to allow for insertion and removal. The smooth feel also helps keep a better grip on the normally slippery devices and smartphones. Think of this case as a tough hard shell equivalent to a skin case: thick and hard enough to withstand some impact but still somewhat flexible to fit over and be removed from the device. And, it’s lightweight and easily washable. Don’t forget its very easy on the wallet price of $11.00. You’d be hard pressed to find many cases available that is this budget priced.

Here are my observations:

I really like the smooth rubbery feel of the case as it helps me get a better grip on device, similar to what a skin case offers. Its rigid yet flexible shell helps protect from scratches and slight impact. Once the case is snapped on, it is securely fastened and clasped on the device so you can be assured that it won’t fall out or slip out. The case practically becomes a part of the smartphone device once it’s attached as it is quite secured. The case is very easy to clean. Simply wipe over with a damp cloth or remove the case and wash in warm soapy water and air dry. The case is very lightweight and I love how it takes up very little bulk. Think lightweight protection.

Here are some not so positive observations. The case can be somewhat difficult to remove once it’s attached. You will need to bend it a bit at the sides and along the device to unsnap its grip. If you need to access the battery, you will need to remove the case as there is no direct access to the battery (ie. no battery cover cutout). Like most plastic and rubbery cases, the case will attract some dust and particles and it can get a bit oily (from your fingers) after a while. But cleaning is a breeze as you can wipe it clean with a damp cloth or remove it and wash in soapy water. Although the case does protect the smartphone device at the sides and back, the front is not protected. If you are in need of a case that will protect the screen and accidental pressing of buttons, you will need to find a different case that will protect those areas.

As a modified and alternative to skin case that offers somewhat better impact protection, this rubberized hard back case does a good job at a decent price. At this price, you could afford to get all three colors: black, blue and red and swap them out for a different color or mood each day.

For me, being someone who prefers substance over style, this case has become my favorite one since it offers what I need: a case to allow me a better grip on my Nokia E71 smartphone, prevent getting yucky oily stains on my battery cover (I wipe off with a cloth), offers good hard shell protection against impact and scratches and adds very little bulk to the overall smartphone. Since I carry my smartphones in a pocket nowadays, I don’t need a belt clip and I don’t need much protection for the screen or the keys (since the key lock comes on automatically).

Don’t be fooled by its looks and budget pricing. Brando Workshop’s Rubberized Hard Back Case offers lightweight protection for your smartphone device at a budget price. Its sleek, smooth finish ensures a good grip of your device all the while making it easy for cleaning. Simply wipe with a damp cloth or wash in soapy water. The case is rigid and firm enough to offer slight impact protection yet flexible enough for insertion and removal from the device. It’s lightweight and somewhat thin form snaps snugly and securely on your device almost like a lightweight armor yet it doesn’t add much weight or bulk. If you’re looking for a case that offers decent protection from scratches and bumps without breaking the bank, take a good look at Brando Workshop’s Rubberized Hard Back Case. Think of this as a hard shelled variation of a skin case, offering the benefits of a skin case and the protection of a hard shell case. At this price, why not get all three (black, blue, red) colors?
